Shab-e-Barat is also called the Night of Forgiveness. Shab’ means night, and ‘Barat’ means freedom. Shab-e-Barat is the special night when Muslims pray for forgiveness and seek Allah’s mercy. This is a blessed and special night that comes on the 15th day of Sha‘ban mean 3rd February 2026 and this eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This night is linked with forgiveness and the mercy of Allah(S.W.A). Many people pray to Allah(S.W.A), ask for His mercy, repent sincerely from the heart, and offer extra voluntary prayers.
Importance of Shab-e-Barat
Shab-e-Barat is a blessed night. There is no fixed or special way to observe it. People should offer their obligatory prayers and may also perform extra voluntary prayers. They should ask Allah(S.W.A) for forgiveness, make duas, and recite the Holy Quran. If possible, offering Salat-ut-Tasbih is very rewarding.
A beautiful dua to recite is:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ”
“Our god, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
(Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:201)
It is good to repeat this dua as much as possible. If one is able, visiting the graves of loved ones and making dua for them is also encouraged.
Shab-e-Barat: What Scholars Say
Some scholars do not consider any special worship required for Shab-e-Barat. They say that all the hadiths related to this night are weak. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) and his companions did not specifically observe this night for any acts of worship.
All scholars agree that worship should always stay within the guidance of the Quran and authentic hadith. Our worship should follow the example of the Prophet ﷺ. We should do acts of worship the way he did in his life. There is no specific event connected to Shab e Barat like there is with Laylatul-Qadr. Still, Muslims spend this night in worship, praying to Allah(S.W.A) and asking for His closeness. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) used to fast a lot during this month and would visit Jannat-ul-Baqi to pray for the deceased.
Hazrat Aisha R.A. said that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) did not fast as much in any other month as he did in Shaban.
That is why many Muslims fast during Shaban. However, it is important to understand that there is no particular historical event linked to the night of Shab-e-Barat.
Preparing for Ramadan in Sha‘ban
Since Ramadan usually begins about 15 days after the middle of Sha‘ban, many people see Shaban as a bridge leading into Ramadan. Worship and fasting during Sha‘ban are often seen as a way to prepare for Ramadan. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) also increased his worship during Sha‘ban and observed more fasts. Fasting on the 14th and 15th of any Islamic month is already a Sunnah practice.
However, it is important to understand that there is no specific event linked to the 15th of Sha‘ban like there is with Laylatul Qadr.
